Qi Posture Exercise 2

Point.

Correct your shoulders

It is common for people of today to have sloping shoulders, from too much deskwork and what not. This afflicts the neck and the whole chest. The previous exercise for finding the right posture does not really solve that problem.

But the below simple method is a good way of correcting your shoulders, unless they already are completely straight — and they are probably not.

You can do it after the previous exercise, when you stand up and have rested for a little while in that position. Well, you can correct your shoulders any time you like or feel the need. The exercise works fine on its own. Just be aware that it is hard to correct the shoulders if the back is far from straight. Should that be the case, start with the previous exercise, and then do this one.

How to do it

  1. Stand straight with your arms along the sides of your body, and your feet at approximately shoulder distance. Relax.

  2. Extend your arms to the sides, so that they are at shoulder height. Extend your index fingers, too, as if you point at something far away. Do not focus on extending your arms from your shoulders, because that can get tense. Instead, concentrate on the fingers pointing far away. Enhance this by glancing in both directions. If you have familiarized yourself with the proper breathing technique, you should make an extended exhalation at this moment, as if you are breathing through your index fingers and your exhalation air is flowing in the same direction you point. Keep this extended position only as long as it feels vivid and comfortable — no more than a minute, but less is fine. It is enough that you feel for a moment that you reach really far.

  3. Let the arms fall to your sides and rest there, without changing the position of your shoulders. This will immediately make your shoulders feel that they have sort of opened, lightened, and become freer. You might experience it as a tingling inside of them, a pleasant sensation that tends to spread to the chest, maybe also the neck.

  4. Rest in this position for a moment, while noticing how it feels.

  5. Repeat the exercise. Once is never, twice is always. You can do it as many times in a row as you like, but I doubt that it makes much difference after the second or third time.

You should make it a habit to do this exercise right after the previous one, as long as it makes a noticeable difference in your shoulders. It helps to improve your posture. You can also do it by itself, without the previous exercise preceding it — but only if it gives an obvious effect. Otherwise it is a waste of time.

It is an excellent stretching exercise when you have sat for a long time by the computer, or worked at a desk with something minute and complicated.

Maybe the shoulders will not open by this exercise, no matter how often you repeat it. Then it can be of additional help to do the whole exercise lying down.

Lie on your back, and extend your arms to the sides, in contact with the floor. After doing the pointing, bring the arms back to your sides. It is almost like making snow angels. If your shoulders have been quite sunken, doing this exercise lying down may be what makes them change into a more natural position.
